Sublern ("we", "our", or "us") operates the Sublern browser extension (the "Extension") available for Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Microsoft Edge. This page informs you of our policies regarding the processing of user data when you use our Extension in any of these browsers.
We do not collect, store, or transmit any personal information that can be used to identify you (such as your name, email address, or IP address).
To provide the Extension's core functionality, we temporarily process the following data only at your explicit request and only for the duration of the specific action:
- Audio Data: When you use the "generate subtitles from audio" feature, the Extension captures audio from your active browser tab. This audio is streamed directly to a third-party speech-to-text API (such as Deepgram) for transcription. The audio is processed transiently and is not stored by us or the Extension.
- Screen Content: When you use the "read burned-in subtitles" feature, the Extension captures a portion of your screen showing the video. This image is sent to a third-party OCR API (such as OCR.space) for text extraction. The image is processed transiently and is not stored by us or the Extension.
- Text Data: When you hover over a word in subtitles to get a translation, the word and its context are sent to a third-party translation API (such as Reverso) to provide you with a translation and usage examples. This text is processed transiently and is not stored by us or the Extension.
All data processing is performed exclusively to fulfill user-initiated requests and provide the Extension's features. The data is not used for any other purpose, such as profiling, advertising, or analytics.
We do not sell, trade, or rent your information to others. To provide our services, we use the following third-party APIs:
- Reverso API (
https://api.reverso.net/*): Used for word translation and usage examples. - OCR.space API (
https://api.ocr.space/*): Used for extracting text from images (burned-in subtitles). - Deepgram API (
wss://api.deepgram.com/*): Used for transcribing audio to text.
Your data is transmitted to these services solely for processing the specific request you have initiated. We encourage you to review the privacy policies of these third-party services. No data is ever sent to our own servers.
All data transmission between the Extension and third-party APIs is encrypted using HTTPS/WSS. All processing occurs in transit and is not stored. We do not retain any copies of your data after the request is completed.
You are in control. All data processing is triggered by your explicit actions (e.g., clicking a button to generate subtitles, hovering over a word). You can stop using the Extension at any time by uninstalling it from your browser.
If you have any concerns about how your data is handled, you have the right to:
- Request clarification about what data is processed.
- Withdraw your consent by discontinuing use of the Extension.
To provide its features, the Extension requires certain browser permissions:
- Storage: Used to save your preferences locally (e.g., translation language, auto-play settings, dictionary).
- activeTab: Required to capture the current tab's content when you enable OCR (reading burned-in subtitles) or audio capture for speech-to-text. This permission is only used when you explicitly activate these features.
- tabCapture: Required to capture audio from your active browser tab when you enable the "generate subtitles from audio" feature. This permission is only used when you explicitly activate this feature and stops immediately after the transcription is complete.
- Host permissions: Required to communicate with third-party APIs: Reverso for translation, OCR.space for image-to-text, and Deepgram for speech-to-text. These permissions are listed in the Extension's manifest and are used solely for the purposes described.
These permissions are requested solely for the functionality described and are not used for any other purposes.
We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the "Last updated" date at the top. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
