NordVPN - a VPN proxy extension for Firefox by NordVPN

by Firefox user 15467501, 7 years agoOn one hand, Nord is the very best for VPN. I adore these folks and keep renewing my 3 year subscription. I will remain loyal as long as I'm able because Nord cares a lot about our privacy, and being based in Switzerland allows them to accomplish that in the many ways they lead on.
On the other hand, the performance over the past 1 year has become almost unbearable on both iOS and Linux. Linux app has stopped working altogether, so I've resorted to this lightweight Firefox extension. It was working fine for a couple of months, and now the "search" for new servers function is broken and just spins its wheels, leaving me only able to join the last 3 countries I successfully accessed.
That wouldn't be so bad except that now the app will start as connected, but with me logged out. The server won't allow me to load any content online, and won't allow me to login with my credentials. And since there is no disconnect button - it will spin its wheels, not allowing me to login, which is required to access the "disconnect" button. So literally the only way to disconnect is to remove the extension entirely and reinstall.
May I suggest a disconnect button be added, whether or not a person is logged in? *please?*
Don't get me started on iOS, tech support tells me it's working fine and have stopped answering my e-mails, I've had to remove it from my phone otherwise it takes my phone over 90 seconds to access any data through vpn every time I unlock my phone.
(Just to clarify, for many years all of these funtions on all platforms worked FLAWLESSLY. Like a dream. I'm hanging in there with you because of your glory days Nord)
You were the king Nord, we were a dream team, what happened? I'm not switching until I literally have to due to functionality - it disappoints me that such a thing has gone from looking absurd as of 2018, to almost inevitable in 2020.

- Rated 1 out of 5by leetNigthshade, a month agoNew permissions verbatim: "The developer says this extension collects: personally identifying information, financial and payment information." Wtf. I don't care if that's different wording of existing permissions, I don't want you to have those permissions, NordVPN.
If you look at the Proton VPN extension it only requires permissions for Access your data for account.proton.me and account.protonvpn.com. Whereas for Nord it's required to access all website data, not optional. If Nord needs to access data for account information, they should restrict it to Nord domain(s), rather than leaving it open for this extension to be able to read all website data. That seems like an implementation improvement they can make, rather than excuses.Developer response
posted 25 days agoHello! Thank you for your review. Please note that despite the different wording, the same permissions as previously are used and we do not collect any additional information. While we cannot comment on other services, website access is required for VPN to run on them. If you'd like more information or have any other questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at support@nordvpn.com. -D.S. - Rated 1 out of 5by Shadi, a month agoNordVPN is pushing an update to force data harvesting including privacy data and payment information. Even from paying users like me!

posted a month agoHello! Thanks for noticing. A few days back Firefox update changed how permissions are displayed, but we haven't introduced any new data collection. The broad language refers to existing info like your subscription ID and currency. We remain dedicated to privacy and only use the data necessary to keep things working for you. -L.L. - Rated 5 out of 5by Firefox user 16263539, a month agoDon't panic, this is a Firefox policy change, not a NordVPN data grab.
NordVPN hasn't introduced any new telemetry, tracking, or background data harvesting. They simply pushed an update to comply with Firefox's new rules. Because this is a premium, account-based service, it naturally handles:
Authentication: Your Nord Account login/email.
Financial Info: Checking your active subscription status so the extension actually works.
Location: Finding the closest, fastest VPN servers to route your traffic.
Chill. It's exactly the same Nord VPN service we've been getting all along.Developer response

posted a month agoHey, yesterday we had a Firefox extension update approved, and Firefox is now showing broader consent categories for data the extension already used. No new data collection was introduced on our side. The wording may look alarming, but in reality it refers to things like subscription ID/type, payment status, currency, etc. We remain committed to collecting only the minimum data necessary to provide and maintain the service. -L.L. - Rated 1 out of 5by Atman, a month ago
- Rated 1 out of 5by Firefox user 16751809, a month agoWhat the heck is that 🤨 ? Private data harvesting... for a privacy related product.
One could start think about if our data is actually private when using Nord products.
If this won't be reverted no way I'm gonna prolong subscription.

Edit: (forbidden URLs: look for ["Announcing data collection consent changes for new Firefox extensions" site:blog.mozilla.org] in search engine)- is what I assume is L.L. referring to.
I'd like to see explanation then why it was collected up until now, just simply policy was not requiring to explicitly be stated up until now.
Can this really, really cannot be avoided?Developer response
posted a month agoHello! To be clear, no new data collection was introduced with yesterday's update. Firefox is now showing broader descriptions for existing data like subscription IDs and payment info. It might look alarming, but we are still focused on data minimization and only use what’s essential to provide the service. -L.L. - Rated 3 out of 5by dg9281, a month agoAs other commenters mentioned, its started to force privacy data harvesting, including financial information, forms, and payment data.

posted a month agoHello there. We understand the concern, but no new data is being collected. Firefox recently updated their consent categories for data the extension already used, such as payment status and subscription type. While the new wording sounds broad, our policy hasn't changed - we only collect the minimum data required to maintain your service. -L.L.
