by Firefox user 13629833, 9 years agoHave used it for years, always worked faultlessly, downloaded very efficiently, never had any problems. But now - new version has ruined it. Before you could see and select the different possible downloads wherever you were without leaving the tab. Now it opens in a new tab which completely interrupts everything. A bit like having to stop your car and get out just to put on the indicator. Yes, it's that irritating. Also the downloads would show up in the Firefox download tab, you could monitor progress and see all ongoing, finished or failed downloads that way, very simple, very clear and again with no effect on the current tab. Now nothing there. To continue the car analogy, the dashboard has just been taken away, no speedo, no rev counter or fuel gauge. Feels like a spectacular own goal to me, but it seems to be deliberate. And where do you set the download folder, don't tell me you can't set that any more, but it certainly isn't obvious if you can.
Helpful response from the developer explains that it has had to change because of Firefox so beyond their control. Therefore up-rated to 4* as I guess it is still the best of the available options and hopefully they will find ways to get it back to earlier functionality.

posted 9 years agoUnfortunately, since Firefox 57 and beyond Mozilla no longer supports XPCOM type of add-ons, such as the old version of AVD.
We continue to work on migration AVD to a new platform and returning the habitual appearance as much as it possible in new Firefox versions, but it still may not support some features that the old AVD is used to.
You still can install old AVD version in Firefox 56 and below from Mozilla website here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/video-downloader-player/versions/
More about new AVD 3.0 you can read in our article here: https://support.ant.com/hc/en-us/articles/115005568983-About-the-new-Ant-Video-Downloader-3-0

As a user of this extension for about 10 years ...a couple of years ago (2021) when they did the update to the new interface style etc. I immediately warned people to not use it.
Its bad, breaks everything, I reverted back to the last oldest version before that very update ... and I am still using that very version (4.9.2) right now.
I find that it still works good and better then any later version ever could.
I see things havent exactly gotten better since the last time I checked in here.
I also see some people asking for the native app but can't find any. I still have it.
mediafire.com/file/3pzb6vrwhsg6ahr/AVD_4.9.2.rar/file
This rar includes the original 4.9.2 addon installation files for Firefox and the matching native app.
For those interested;
Uninstall any current version of the addon and native app.
Simply extract the .rar
Drag the fx.xpi file into firefox, and it should pop up asking to install
Install the native app if you want
But in Firefox, disable Auto updates on this extension, it just ruins it.
In case you were going to want to try .... I can not guarantee that this specific native app version works with a later browser addon version either. It might just start crying about how that's not up to date. I am not gonna go through the trouble of testing it, I just don't care enough. There are other browser addons to begin with as well.
Now if I could only get Mozilla to stop making stupid changes nobody asked for to begin with as they have done in the past few years ... we'd all be happy campers.
